Gateaux Bakery & Cafe King Cakes
The Epiphany was Jan. 6th. We are officially in Carnival season! Carnival is celebrated with parades, balls and most importantly "King Cakes"! The season runs now through "Mardi Gras", which is French for “Fat Tuesday”. Mardi Gras is always the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday so this year at midnight on Tuesday March 5th, Lent begins.
Louisiana-style King Cakes are generally made of a sweet cakey bread dough. Variants can contain all types of fillings, cinnamon, pecans, cream cheese and fruits but most versions are shaped into a circle or oval to mimic the appearance of a king’s crown and decorated with colored sugar sprinkles associated with Mardi Gras: green, gold, and purple (representing faith, power, and justice). Additionally, King Cakes are synonymous with the inclusion of a fève, which means “bean” in French. The fève is used to symbolize the "baby Jesus". Today almost all King Cakes include a plastic baby, bean or half pecan. The lucky person who receives the slice of cake with the fève is King for the day but must bring their own King Cake to the next celebration.
While we don’t stock them, but our traditional brioche style King cake topped with purple (justice,) green (faith), and yellow gold (power) icing are available for special order (couple days notice) for $25; stuffed and/or braided additional fee depending on complexity.
